Default What to do with wedding dress?

I've been married for two years and my wedding dress has been in a back room at my parent's house ever since. I have no idea what to do with it - I love it but I don't know if any future daughter or relative would want to wear it. It is a mermaid dress and I know that's not everyone's style.... and in 20 or 30 years, who knows, lol. I don't know if I want to sell it, or even if it would sell.

But I really don't want it just sitting there yellowing away. (Would be so sad). I know about dress preserving - is it worth it, how much does it cost?

So, what should I do with it?

My mum made herself, her wedding dress into my christening dress.

I've always thought that was nice.

I would go with preserving your dress. Or you could use it as a halloween costume.

Take photos of the dress. Sell it. I know plenty of women who saved their dresses for the daughters to wear and nobody would be seen dead in some of those styles. My one former coworker's mom was a drop dead knockout in the 1940s movie star like dress she wore in the 50s. Her daughter, who was already thin, had to starve herself to fit into it and it looked terrible on her non-curving figure. Let someone else who doesn't have a lot of money, enjoy and BE MARRIED in your dress. Far better, in my opinion, then just letting it waste in the closet.

Be aware that 2 years later, your dress would more likely sell at 25% of what you paid. To get 50%, you'd have to sell it the same season or just after.

Oh, I love Jen's idea.

I was married 31 yrs ago, had my gown preserved and just opened it up this past week ---- it has been in the huge box for 31 yrs in a cupboard. One of my daughters is recently engaged (I have 3), but I know none of them will wear the dress. I've been looking at it and wondering what the heck I can do with the thing (veil and all). I'd love to make it into something special to give to each of my 3 daughters (cut it up and make something out of it), just can't figure out what that thing would be. Jen, your mom came up with such a good idea- wish I would have thought of that 28 years ago!

Would love to make that dress into something special that my daughters could use on their wedding day - anyone have ideas?

Its not very expensive to preserve your dress - a good dry cleaner will do it for about $200. I still have mine 'preserved', although I've thought about shortening it and redesigning it. Who knows, maybe you'll want to wear it when you renew your vows at your 50th anniversary. I say keep it. However, other ideas I've heard include:

-incorporate all or part of the dress into a quilt
-shorten the dress (to wear again) and have part of the extra fabric used to frame (to mat or as a background) something/s from your wedding (invitation, garter etc.)

But I'd rather keep it...

Preserve the dress. You can make pieces for your daughter or someone special later in life like a flower girl pillow, a veil, a small bag. all sorts of things. She can even have her dress made and use the fabric from your dress especially if it has lace or beading

If you still fit into the dress you should totally do the trash the dress concept. Have a friend or hire a photographer to take pictures of you in the dress in the park playing on the swings or at the beach splashing through the water. If you don't like the idea I'd say just put it into a box and save it for a child---perhaps if you're religious you'll want it as a christening gown or it could be made into your child's first easter outfit.
