Take courses in fashion, interior design, business management, planning management, and other such courses. If the college offers a more specific class set for wedding planning, then follow that. But definitely, go for the ones I've suggested. Another one to consider is a cake decorating course, and cooking. I know these sound like weird course choices for being a wedding planner, but you need to be knowledgeable in most of these areas to be a really successful wedding planner, and honestly, it won't hurt you, either.
The best way to get yourself known is word of mouth, and the way to get that, is to do some weddings - if your friends are getting married in the near future, ask if you can help plan their weddings, and get some experience. Start small and work your way up. After you have a few weddings under your belt, create a portfolio from the weddings you've done (with the married couples' permission to use pictures from their weddings), and advertise, advertise, advertise. Always, though, the best advertisement around is word of mouth.
Good luck :)
