Default is it tacky to make a cd to play at my wedding reception instead of a dj?

im planning my wedding that me and my fiance are paying for.. we have a budget for $2000 we are skipping the flowers, the church and getting married in the resturant that we are holding the reception at. Im scared that if we dont have some sort of music it will be tacky...we sit and eat dinner and leave?! so is it really tacky to make a cd of music instead of a dj?! other ideas will be apriciated!! thanks!!

My fiance's cousin got married in November and she played a CD at her wedding. She had one of her really good friends play the CD when she needed to. She had a bunch of different songs on there that she wanted and a list of when to play them. The girl did end up playing the wrong song at the wrong time though so that was pretty funny, but other than that, it was fine.
There's actually a lot of people that do that. I am going to have a DJ because my uncle has all the DJ equipment and DJ's for parties and stuff, but if he wouldn't have had all of the stuff, I would've probably played a CD instead.

No way.
People at your wedding who might think it was tacky obviously don't deserve to be there. As long as you choose good songs for it there is no problem - and you'd be saving alot of money, DJ's can be expensive nowadays.

Have a good wedding! X

nope i found a cd of traditional wedding songs at hallmark. :)
congrats on the wedding sweetie. if you have any teens at your wedding that you feel are being left out. to old to be a flower girl ring bear but not old enough to be a bridesmaid or groomsmen put them in charge of the cd. tell them when you want certain songs played. label the cds if they are burned ones. also right down a song schedule in case they get nervous and forget. a few days before the wedding let them try it out to get used to the cd player {if they aren't using their own}

I wouldn't call it tacky. But I have never seen it work well at all. Usually the couple picks songs they love to listen to but most are not danceable and they put them on the cd in an awkward order simply becasue they don't have the same experience that a professional dj has. If a song doesn't work for the crowd and it clears the dance floor, just having a cd won't fix that. But a dj does knows how to get around that.

I have been to lots of weddings that didn't have any dancing or music and guests mingled the entire time without any problems and no one left early. But it depends on your guests.

I would say definitely make sure there's music at your wedding - nothing sets the mood better. Making a CD is a perfect, budget-friendly alternative if you have a good ear for music and an idea of what your guests will like. Sometimes DJs are better at "reading" the crowd and playing appropriate music at appropriate times, but personally I don't like the banter. The less announcements and pointless chatter the better, I say.

I wouldn't think so. Even iTunes has a section for weddings to download to play at your wedding. :)
