Default I notice that some married women wear their engagement ring and also two wedding rings- what's the 3rd ring?

the 3rd ring is a maturnity ring! (sorry cant spell it)
i have been told you get it either when your first child is born (after marriage) or on your first wedding anniversery, which ever one comes first!

a lot of times it's an anniversary band... Also, i know a lot of people who couldn't afford a big ring when they first got engaged and once they get older & can afford it they upgrade.

I don't believe this to be three rings. You can buy wedding bands called accent bands I think. You have the wedding band and it actually slips between the accent band creating the look of 3 rings. This is what I have seen when looking at rings myself.
