As long as you have a good quality camera, do it your self, but make sure to plan out what pics. you want first and make a checklist. Make sure your try out your camera in the dark etc.

Craigslist. We found our engagement photographer on Craigslist because we're spending a ton on our wedding photographer (who is out of state), and we wanted to save money wherever possible. Typically, photographers on Craigslist cater to those on a tight budget. Sometimes they're just starting out and are trying to gain experience, and sometimes they're a bit more experienced, but offer mroe affordable packages.

My only advice to you is, if you can, have photography be the one thing you splurge on. Everything else, the flowers, the cake, the food and favors, last one day. The photos last forever. The last thing you want is to skimp on photography and end up with horrible pictures. Be sure to really research your photograher and ask for references if they have experience. Hiring someone eithout experience can work out, but is also risky.

If you go to a studio you will pay top dollar. Try and find a free lance weding photographer that works out of his house. Look at his work, ask ffor references. A good picture is "in focus and well lit"

If you're really strapped for cash, check out websites like craigslist.com to try to find a photography student. They'll usually do it for a couple hundred bucks. Or ask your friends and family members if they know anyone who does photography as a hobby that might want to do it for a deal. I wish I could remember the website I found when I was hiring my wedding vendors, but there are some that you sign up on, enter your wedding information and what services you need, and then the vendors contact you. That's how I found my wedding DJ and ended up saving about 40%. I just found this one: http://www.weddingmanor.com/ that offers that service, and you can probably find others if you google it.
