It truly depends on the popularity of the venue, and their policies. For example, our venue would not book more than 14 months in advance, and they recommended to have your choice of dates, to book within a year of when you wanted to get married.

Call up the venue and ask when they recommend you book. That's the sure fire way to get what you want.

I am from Long Island as well, the only thing I can say is my cousin went to book a site about 15 months before her wedding and A LOT of places told her they were booked for the date she wanted and any day near then. I would say if your not set on having a specific date then a year should be okay, if you are set on a date then more towards a year and a half.

EDIT: Also, a friend of mine is looking to get married in June 2011- SOME places did tell her its too early but, many would allow her to book it.

It all depends on how popular the venue is. I say no less than a year before, but if you already know where you want it, there's no harm in booking now (especially since many places have a price change around the first of the year and if you book now you get locked into the current rate).

On LI, I'd start calling them now asking if you can reserve a date or get in for a viewing and tasting.

In some areas you only need 6 months. But in more major areas like NYC-vicinity, you need to start booking usually 1yr to 1.5yrs in advance (I had cousins who booked almost 2yrs ahead for their preferred venue in Northern NJ).

We booked ours a year in advance. You just need to look around and find a venue you love, then when you do check your date and book it about a year in advance.
