Fondant is the smooth frosting that they can mold and shape numerous ways. Buttercream just covers the cake. If you're looking to get a cake, I would request a sample with the type of frosting you choose. We wanted fondant and ours turned out horrible. It was really thick and rubbery horrible texture. I had to peel mine off just to eat our cake!! Good luck!
